Fowler's Position

tioned into such an unquestioning acceptance of its efficacy that it has now attained the status of a medical dogma, the denial of which is tantamount to the gravest charges of irresponsibility or even damnable heresy. Nevertheless there has been some recent criticism of the position, mostly of an indirect nature, and concerned with its harmful side-effects rather than with the central thesis of the prevention of subphrenic abscess. ' As a result of much recent work, notably by Homans (1934) and de Takats (1945) in America, and Rossle (1937) and Neumann (1939) in Germany, it is now established that postoperative thrombosis is much more common than was formerly believed, and that it usually starts in the deep veins of the calf or the sole of the foot and not in the iliac or femoral vessels

ABSTRACT Background and Aim: Hemodialysis is the most common method of treatment for chronic renal insufficiency an advanced and unretrieveable disorder. Hemodialysis has some complications on which the position of the patient can be effective. Routinely, patients are placed on supine position during hemodialysis, but they are not comfortable in this position, and most of them would like to...
متن کاملAssessment of effects of differences in trunk posture during Fowler’s position on hemodynamics and cardiovascular regulation in older and younger subjects
BACKGROUND Downward shifts in blood volume with changing position generally cause tachycardic responses. Age-related decreases in vagal nerve activity could contribute to orthostatic hypotension in older individuals. Fowler's position is a reclined position with the back between 30° and 60°, used to facilitate breathing, eating, and other routine daily activities in frail and elderly patients. ...
متن کاملInfluence of the prone position on a stretcher for pregnant women on maternal and fetal hemodynamic parameters and comfort in pregnancy
OBJECTIVES: To analyze the influence of lying in prone position on a specially designed stretcher on the maternal-fetal hemodynamic parameters and comfort of pregnant women. METHODS: A randomized, controlled trial with 33 pregnant women divided into 2 groups: pregnant group sequence 1 and pregnant group sequence 2. The order of positions used in sequence 1 was Fowler's position, prone positio...
متن کاملEffects of trunk posture in Fowler's position on hemodynamics
We speculated that stroke volume would be higher and heart rate would be lower when the head and upper trunk were mainly upright in the Fowler's position. We therefore analyzed the effects of three trunk postures in Fowler's position on heart rate, blood pressure and circulatory volume. Heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (Q), systemic vascular resistance (S...
متن کاملLoads in the lumbar spine during traction therapy.
The purpose of the present study was to determine the loads acting on the lumbar spine when traction therapy was given in the Fowler's position. The study had two parts: a theoretical analysis which showed that traction produced a flexion moment on the spine as well as axial distraction; and an experimental study which measured the flexion moment induced by the adoption of the Fowler's position...
متن کاملEffects of body position on resting lung volume in overweight and mildly to moderately obese subjects.
INTRODUCTION A partial sitting position has been reported to increase functional residual capacity (FRC) in lean subjects, whereas FRC does not change with position in the morbidly obese. The effects of positioning in the subgroup of overweight and mildly to moderately obese subjects have not been examined. We hypothesized that a change in FRC may be related to adipose tissue distribution. ME...
